Dolpopa Amchi Namgyal was born
to father Pema Wangyal and mother Choedon in 1968,
Earth-Monkey year in Dho-Tarap. Early in life, he has
shown remarkable interest and enthusiasm in studies of
Tibetan medicine known as "sowarigpa" and received
initial teachings from his paternal ancestor Lama Gartug
Rinpoche and Ghagar Rinpoche including oral transmission
and empowerment.
He further studied under many well known Amchi Lamas of
Dolpo and Mustang regions.
Following the age old tradition, he received complete
oral transmission and empowerment of hidden treasure
tradition from His Holiness Penor Rinpoche and his
Eminence Shechen Rapjam Rinpoche and the received depth
empowerment of whole cycle of medicine Buddha Sadhana by
his Eminence Chopgya Tri Rinpoche.
Over the years he received many teachings related to
preliminary practices of herbal medicine from many well
know lamas including his Eminence Thinley Norbu, His
Holiness Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Kyagbje Thrukshik
Rinpoche, Tulku Orgyen Rinpoche, and Dolpopa Margom
Rinpoche.
In 2006, Lama Namgyal received discourses on "A Guide to
the Boddhisatava's way of life" by Acarya Shanti Deva
from His Holiness Dalai Lama. In 1994, he was formally
declared as seat holder of Ribom Gonpa in Dho-Tarap,
Dolpo in large religious gathering of Mendup Ritual
which was presided by late Jampa Rinpoche.
Lama Namgyal's dedication and
services to the people of Dolpo is amazingly a rare
personal quality to find with. He is the President of
Dolpo Amchi Association and every year makes valid
contributions to whole amchi communities in the
Himalayan region wholeheartedly.
As ancient sowarigpa (herbal
medical studies) tradition is fast deteriorating in
Dolpo region, every year he continues to work for
revival and promotion. Besides he also works for the
renovation and restauration of Historical monasteries in
Dolpo in general and Dho-Tarap in particular.
At present Lama Namgyal is
running a small herbal clinic at Rebom Gonpa, Dho-Tarap,
Dolpo, serving the local people from various diseases.
Meditation or Yoga practices and various rituals are
also performed as optional remedies to heal the sick.
He is also current President of
Mentsikhang, Dho-Tarap, and very often teaches ancient
history, religion, traditional indigenous knowledge
practices such as sowarigpa for the local children in
Dolpo.
He remains grateful to all the
individuals and organizations whose support has been
very fruitful in realizing many of his works in Dolpo.
